Japan’s largest gas trader has expressed strong interest in investing in Montenegro, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić announced.

According to Spajić, JERA, the biggest gas trading company in Japan and a subsidiary of the country’s two largest energy firms, operates one of the world’s largest environmentally friendly power plants — the Futtsu plant. This facility has a capacity of 5.16 gigawatts spread across 21 units, which is five times greater than Montenegro’s total annual energy needs and twenty times larger than the capacity of the country’s Thermal Power Plant Pljevlja (TEPV).

Prime Minister Spajić highlighted that this potential partnership with JERA represents a significant opportunity to jointly develop and capitalize on Montenegro’s energy resources. By combining Montenegro’s natural potential with JERA’s expertise and capacity, the cooperation could strengthen the country’s energy sector, support sustainable development, and attract further international investments.

This interest from a major global energy player signals growing confidence in Montenegro’s strategic position and its commitment to enhancing energy infrastructure and diversifying energy sources in the region. The government aims to leverage such partnerships to boost economic growth, improve energy security, and advance Montenegro’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
