In preparation for the upcoming summer tourist season, Montenegro’s electric distribution system operator, CEDIS, is intensifying maintenance and upgrade activities on the power grid to handle increased demand and different operating conditions.

Preventive maintenance began immediately after the New Year holidays, focusing on key substations and equipment across coastal municipalities such as Herceg Novi, Tivat, Kotor, Budva, Bar, and Ulcinj. This includes replacing old switches with more reliable vacuum circuit breakers and revising transformers and power lines to ensure a stable and secure power supply.

CEDIS is also executing investment projects aimed at improving the network’s capacity and reliability. Major works include the construction of six new substations and reconstruction of ten existing ones in Bar, Budva, and Ulcinj, with an investment value of around €1 million. In the northern coastal region (Herceg Novi, Kotor, Tivat), six substations are under construction, including the important 35/10 kV Grbalj 2 substation, enhancing power supply and enabling new user connections.

By the end of June, works on reconstructing 21 substations and replacing transformers are expected to be completed. These upgrades will support the growing tourist centers by increasing capacity, reducing energy losses, and improving voltage stability.

However, CEDIS highlights challenges such as the lack of spatial planning documentation and lengthy legal procedures for land acquisition, which require stronger involvement from government institutions.

Overall, CEDIS is dedicating significant resources to ensure the power infrastructure meets the increased demands of the summer season, supporting the tourism and hospitality sectors critical to Montenegro’s economy.
