Rezolv Energy starts up 225 MW St. George solar project in Bulgaria, adding 90 MW battery storage
Rezolv Energy has officially launched operations at the St. George solar power plant in northeastern Bulgaria, completing the commissioning of one of the country’s largest photovoltaic projects to date. For investors and grid stakeholders alike, the development matters not only for its scale, but also for how it combines long-duration clean generation with battery storage and secured demand.
From brownfield site to major renewable hub
Located near Silistra, the project has an installed capacity of 225 MW and was built on the site of the former Silistra airport. By converting a previously unused brownfield area into a renewable energy hub, Rezolv is positioning the facility as a long-term contributor to Bulgaria’s power system, with expected operations lasting at least 30 years.
Investment size, output expectations and contracted revenue
The total investment is approximately 255 million euros, with expected annual electricity production of around 313 GWh. A substantial portion of output is already secured through a long-term arrangement with Ardagh Glass Packaging Europe: under a 12-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPPA), nearly one-third of the plant’s generation is covered.
Battery storage to support grid flexibility
Beyond solar capacity, St. George includes a battery energy storage system rated at 90 MW / 240 MWh. The storage component is intended to enhance grid flexibility and support system stability, reflecting growing emphasis on balancing variable renewable generation. Financial backing for the storage element came through the EU-supported NextGenerationEU program.
Project financing backed by IFC and Raiffeisen
Additional funding was provided through 90 million euros in debt financing arranged by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Raiffeisen Bank International. The debt package supports both construction activities and integration into Bulgaria’s national grid.
Execution timeline and local delivery partners
Rezolv Energy CEO Alastair Hammond described commissioning as a key milestone for the company as it moves from development into long-term renewable operations. He said full commercial operation was reached in less than three years after development rights were secured, underscoring what Rezolv characterizes as rapid execution.
During construction, Rezolv worked with local partners Solarpro and CMC Europe. Green Solar Energy handled high-voltage infrastructure and grid connection works to ensure integration into Bulgaria’s electricity transmission system.
