Bulgaria files gas diversification strategy with European Commission to cut Russian supply dependence
Bulgaria has formally delivered its national strategy for diversifying natural gas supplies to the European Commission, framing the move as a step toward lowering dependence on Russian gas while reinforcing long-term energy security. The filing is designed to align with EU rules that aim to gradually phase out Russian gas and to strengthen integration with broader European energy systems.
A roadmap built around diversification and market access
Under the EU framework referenced by Bulgaria, the document sets out a roadmap for securing alternative supply sources, expanding critical infrastructure, and improving access to international gas markets. Officials say the strategy’s core is supply resilience—achieved through diversification measures and closer integration with the European gas network.
Vertical Gas Corridor, interconnectors and storage upgrades
A central component of the plan is further development of the Vertical Gas Corridor. Bulgaria also points to modernization of regional interconnectors and expansion of the Chiren underground gas storage facility as part of its effort to improve flexibility and responsiveness during disruptions.
Greater LNG capability to manage volatility
The strategy also emphasizes increasing access to liquefied natural gas (LNG) through international import terminals. The stated purpose is to give Bulgaria more options in responding to market fluctuations and potential supply interruptions.
Implementation underway and EU alignment stressed
According to Bulgaria’s Ministry of Energy, multiple elements of the strategy are already being implemented. These include infrastructure upgrade projects, measures intended to improve system flexibility, and enhanced coordination between state institutions and energy operators aimed at supporting more efficient market functioning.
Outgoing Energy Minister Traicho Traikov said Bulgaria chose to act early in contributing proactively to broader European efforts focused on energy independence and resilience. He added that the strategy reflects Bulgaria’s ambition to maintain a significant role in regional energy security while supporting stability across European energy systems and economies.
Officials also noted that the submitted document is fully aligned with EU principles on solidarity among member states and on free movement of natural gas within the internal market. The Ministry described it as a practical framework backed by concrete infrastructure projects, clear implementation timelines, and a long-term vision for developing Bulgaria’s national energy sector—positioning the country as an important participant in a more interconnected and competitive regional gas market.
