Green Breeze Wind Farm clears major grid step in Romania ahead of commercial start

Green Breeze Wind Farm in eastern Romania has reached a critical readiness milestone after commissioning its 220 kV transformer substation in Frumușița, a step that enables the project to connect to the country’s national electricity transmission system ahead of full commercial operation. For investors and developers, grid connectivity is often the practical gateway from construction progress to revenue generation, and this development positions the wind farm for ramp-up in the near term.

Substation commissioning unlocks transmission-grid access

The wind farm is located in Galați County and was developed by Swedish renewable energy company OX2 for Nala Renewables, a joint venture backed by commodity trading firm Trafigura and IFM Investors. Project partners said the commissioning of the Frumușița substation marks a key stage of completion and supports future electricity exports into Romania’s national transmission grid. Full commercial operation is expected within the coming months.

Scale, technology and expected output

Green Breeze Wind Farm has an installed capacity of 99.2 MW and comprises 16 Vestas V162-6.2 MW turbines. Once fully operational, developers expect annual generation of approximately 312 GWh, enough to supply around 51,000 households. They also estimate the project will reduce CO₂ emissions by about 150,000 tons per year, aligning with Romania’s broader energy transition efforts.

Development timeline and ownership structure

Construction began in late 2024 after Nala Renewables acquired the project from OX2 earlier that year. Under the arrangement, OX2 remained responsible for construction and operational delivery, while Nala Renewables retained investment oversight.

The transaction also included a 12-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with a multinational corporate offtaker, designed to provide long-term revenue stability.

Financing and regional expansion signals

Financing was secured through Erste Group and its Romanian subsidiary Banca Comercială Română, underscoring continued bank appetite for utility-scale renewable assets across Central and Eastern Europe.

Green Breeze Wind Farm is described as OX2’s first fully completed renewable energy project in Romania. At the same time, the company is developing a wider pipeline totaling approximately 1,100 MW, indicating continued expansion plans for wind capacity in the country.
