Alteo brings new 20 MWh battery storage online in Győr as Hungary backs grid flexibility
Hungary’s push to integrate more renewables is increasingly being matched by investments that can smooth power flows and support grid stability. Alteo’s latest step—commissioning a new battery energy storage system (BESS) in Győr—highlights how storage is being deployed not just as standalone infrastructure, but as an add-on that leverages existing generation assets and grid access.
A 20 MWh unit built next to gas engines
The new facility, located in Győr, has a capacity of 20 MWh. It operates alongside an existing gas-fired power plant, allowing Alteo to use available grid connection capacity more efficiently through integration with existing infrastructure. The BESS was constructed next to a site housing multiple gas engines, enabling the subsidiary to draw on established operational systems to optimize performance.
Funded under Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan
The project is part of a broader investment cycle supported by Hungary’s Recovery and Resilience Plan. Several Alteo subsidiaries secured funding for battery storage developments under this framework. In Győr, Alteo-Therm implemented the facility with total investment of approximately €7.4 million, including €2.4 million in non-repayable grants.
District heating link supports diversified operations
Beyond electricity supply and grid stability, the same subsidiary also provides district heating services in several cities. By combining electricity balancing with heat-related operations at the local level, the project contributes to a more resilient and diversified energy system.
Total storage capacity rises to 90 MW
With the new commissioning, Alteo’s total aggregated storage capacity—managed through its centralized control system—reaches 90 MW. The expansion follows earlier activity in the same region: a 50 MW system commissioned earlier this year in Győr and a 10 MW installation launched shortly afterward in Bana.
By continuing to invest in battery storage technologies, Alteo is positioning itself to improve network reliability while supporting the integration of an increasing share of renewable energy.
