Kraftfeld Energy locks in financing for Romania’s Maruntei–Vest hybrid solar and storage project

Romania’s push to expand renewable capacity is moving from planning to buildout, with Kraftfeld Energy reaching a key step on a new hybrid facility that pairs solar generation with large-scale battery storage. The financing milestone matters for investors because it converts capital commitments into construction momentum—an important signal in markets where grid integration and funding discipline increasingly determine project timelines.

Maruntei–Vest: 61 MW solar plus 100 MWh BESS

The project, called Maruntei–Vest, is located in Olt County and will combine 61 MW of solar capacity with a 100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Construction is already underway, with engineering and construction works being carried out jointly by ENEVO Group and Vertex Energy.

Equity split and €50.4 million project financing

Under the financing structure, Vertex Energy entered the project as a minority shareholder by acquiring a 49% stake, while Kraftfeld Energy retains majority ownership. Alongside the equity arrangements, the Austrian developer secured €50.4 million in project financing arranged by Kommunalkredit.

Second major Romania investment follows Gârla Mare 2

The Olt-based development represents Kraftfeld Energy’s second major investment move in Romania within a short period. It comes after the earlier financing of the Gârla Mare 2 solar project, which has an installed capacity of 126 MW.

Implications for Romania’s grid flexibility

Taken together, the two projects are expected to add nearly 190 MW of solar capacity and around 300 MWh of storage to Romania’s power system. By increasing both generation and dispatchable flexibility through batteries, the expansion is positioned to strengthen renewable output while supporting grid operations as variable solar becomes a larger share of supply.
