Serbia presses on to clarify NIS ownership as talks with MOL stall ahead of May 22
Serbia is continuing efforts to reduce uncertainty over the future ownership structure of oil company NIS, but President Aleksandar Vučić said negotiations have stalled and the end result remains unclear. The comments come ahead of a 22 May deadline tied to discussions on NIS ownership and possible international restrictions—an issue investors will watch closely because it can shape both corporate control and the sanctions risk environment.
Deadline nears as talks remain difficult
Speaking ahead of the 22 May deadline, Vučić said Serbian authorities are working toward securing a long-term arrangement for NIS. However, he acknowledged that progress so far has been limited, underscoring how challenging it has been to convert talks into a definitive outcome.
MOL discussions do not move as expected
Vučić said discussions involving Hungarian energy company MOL have not developed as expected. That lack of momentum reduces optimism for a swift agreement, even as Serbia remains open to finding a mutually acceptable solution.
U.S. expectations and wider political complexity
Vučić also indicated that Belgrade expects understanding from the United States administration regarding the situation, emphasizing that Serbia should not face consequences related to developments surrounding NIS. He added that the negotiations are significantly more complex than what is publicly visible, pointing to broader political and commercial interests influencing discussions behind the scenes.
For markets, the immediate implication is that uncertainty around control and potential international restrictions may persist into the deadline period unless talks accelerate—making timing and external alignment central factors in how investors assess risk around NIS.
