Retele Electrice Romania opens €12 million tender for compact secondary substations

Retele Electrice Romania, part of the PPC Group, has kicked off a major procurement process designed to strengthen Romania’s electricity distribution infrastructure over the coming years. The company is seeking suppliers for compact, factory-assembled secondary substations as part of its long-term investment programme for 2026–2030—an effort investors will watch closely as utilities upgrade capacity and reliability while preparing for higher levels of distributed generation.

Up to €12 million contract for “MINIBOX” transformer stations

The tender covers deliveries valued at up to approximately €12 million, excluding VAT. It focuses on prefabricated concrete transformer stations fitted with 24 kV medium-voltage systems. Marketed as “MINIBOX” units, the installations are fully integrated and intended to speed deployment by reducing on-site construction time and improving operational safety once connected to the grid.

Remote monitoring and grid management integration

After installation, the substations will be incorporated into the network’s remote monitoring and control system. That integration is expected to support more efficient grid management, aligning with a broader modernization strategy aimed at increasing network capacity and improving reliability—key requirements as distribution networks work to accommodate new energy sources, including decentralized generation.

Standardized design for space efficiency and climate resilience

The standardized compact configuration is also expected to optimize space usage at distribution points. In addition, the company says it will strengthen resilience against climate-related disruptions, reflecting how infrastructure upgrades increasingly factor in extreme weather risk alongside day-to-day performance.

Tender timeline and delivery schedule

Bids are open until 25 May. The selected contractor will be responsible for deliveries over a four-year implementation period, extending the impact of the procurement beyond a single installation cycle.
