PPC Energie pilots free electricity windows in Romania to test solar-driven demand shifting

PPC Energie is testing whether households can be nudged to use more electricity when solar generation is strongest—an approach that could improve how renewable power is integrated into the grid while potentially easing costs for consumers. The company’s pilot offers selected customers commercial bonuses for electricity consumed during specific free-of-charge time windows.

How the pilot works and who can join

The trial runs from June through September 2026, with customer registration open between 7 and 20 May. Participation is limited to the first 5,000 eligible customers. PPC Energie says households in the scheme could receive approximately 70 hours of zero-cost electricity per month during the four-month pilot period.

Eligibility is restricted to customers equipped with smart meters connected to PPC Energie’s digital metering infrastructure. Participants will be notified in advance about each free electricity interval via email and through the myPPC mobile application at least 12 hours before the start of each time window.

Renewables integration without changing contracts

PPC Energie positions the initiative as a demonstration of how renewable energy and digitalized power systems can work together. The company says the project is intended to help consumers adjust their usage patterns toward periods when solar output is at its highest, which it links to potential reductions in overall electricity costs.

Importantly, PPC Energie said the pilot does not alter existing electricity contracts, tariff structures, or supply conditions. Instead of changing terms, customers receive a commercial bonus on their monthly bills corresponding to electricity used during designated free periods.

The discount is calculated automatically using meter data transmitted by regional distribution operators, according to the supplier.

Why it matters for investors and households

By tying benefits to consumption timing, the program could encourage households to schedule energy-intensive activities—such as running major appliances or charging electric vehicles—during high-solar hours. PPC Energie also framed the effort as a way to familiarize customers with the advantages of solar generation and underscore the growing role of smart energy infrastructure in optimizing demand.

Ionuț Duna, General Manager of PPC Energie, said the initiative aims to familiarize customers with solar benefits and highlight how smart energy infrastructure can help optimize electricity demand as renewable penetration grows.
