Albania brings 24 MW battery storage online near Fier as it scales flexibility by 2030
Albania has started operating a new battery storage facility near Fier, a development that underscores the country’s effort to improve energy flexibility and strengthen grid resilience. The 24 MW system, supplied by Sineng Electric, is located in southwestern Albania and is positioned in an area increasingly viewed as a regional hub for renewable energy growth.
Grid stability and balancing capacity
Although the investor behind the project has not been disclosed, the facility is already in operation. By contributing to grid stability and providing balancing capacity, the battery is expected to support day-to-day management of electricity supply as Albania continues modernizing its power infrastructure.
Part of a broader storage expansion plan
The commissioning aligns with government plans announced earlier this year to scale up both pumped hydro and battery storage capacity by 2030. The stated goal is to enhance system efficiency and enable more effective integration of intermittent renewable generation into Albania’s national energy mix.
Why Fier is attracting clean-energy investment
Fier and the surrounding region have emerged as a strategic location for clean energy investments, supported by strong solar and wind potential and connections to major transmission corridors. The area continues to draw large-scale projects, including Voltalia’s 140 MW Karavasta solar plant, reinforcing its role in Albania’s ongoing energy transition.
