Montenegro extends fuel excise tax relief as global oil prices stay elevated

Montenegro is extending a temporary reduction in fuel excise duties as global energy markets remain volatile and oil prices stay elevated amid tensions in the Middle East. The decision, announced by the Ministry of Energy, is intended to ease pressure on households and limit the impact of higher international prices on domestic fuel costs.

Five-week extension to May 26

The relief measure was introduced on 24 March and was originally scheduled to expire this week. Under the revised timetable, it will remain in effect for an additional five weeks, pushing the deadline to 26 May.

How the tax cuts work

Under the scheme, excise duties on eurodiesel have been halved. For gasoline, taxes on eurosuper 95 and eurosuper 98 have been reduced by 25 percent.

Goal: reduce pass-through of international price swings

Authorities said the adjustments were designed to limit how much rising international oil prices feed directly into local fuel prices. The extension reflects continued uncertainty in global supply conditions, with the government prioritizing price stability and seeking to protect both households and businesses from further increases in energy expenses.
