Slovenia greenlights 140 MW floating solar at Družmirje Lake under national spatial plan

Slovenia has formally adopted a national spatial plan that clears the development of a major floating solar power project at Družmirje Lake, while also setting out how the surrounding area will be reshaped into a recreational and landscape hub. The decision matters for investors and grid planners because it converts an ambitious renewable concept into a defined implementation framework, including requirements that can reduce planning uncertainty.

140 MW floating solar project moves forward

The government’s approval enables one of Slovenia’s most ambitious renewable energy projects to proceed. The planned installation is estimated at 140 MW, with expectations that it will rank among the largest floating solar facilities in the wider region. Under the adopted planning document, the plant will be installed directly on the lake surface and will include all associated infrastructure needed for operation.

Clear requirements on technical, environmental and safety standards

The spatial plan lays down the technical, environmental, safety, utility and urban design requirements that must be met during implementation. It also incorporates supporting documentation compiled during public consultation, including responses to comments and proposals submitted by municipalities and members of the public.

These inputs were reviewed alongside key studies used to shape the final framework—namely a project variant study, an environmental assessment, and a draft planning proposal—so that the approved plan reflects both technical analysis and community feedback.

Storage and grid connection included to support reliability

Beyond electricity generation, the project is expected to incorporate energy storage systems as well as grid connection equipment. The stated purpose is to enhance reliability and support more stable power output—an important consideration as countries expand variable renewable generation.

Overall, Slovenia’s adopted spatial plan is designed to expand renewable capacity while making efficient use of an existing water surface at Družmirje Lake.
