Bulgartransgaz launches LNG tender to diversify supply and strengthen Bulgaria’s gas security

Bulgartransgaz, Bulgaria’s natural gas transmission system operator, is turning to liquefied natural gas procurement for the first time as it seeks to diversify supply routes and reinforce energy security. By using a competitive LNG-focused tender, the company is aiming to bring greater transparency and reliability to how it meets the technical needs of its transmission network.

LNG volumes targeted for network stability

The planned purchase will run from July 2026 through September 2027. Over that period, Bulgartransgaz expects to secure around 1.5 million MWh of LNG. Importantly, the volumes are intended exclusively for maintaining the stability and functioning of Bulgaria’s gas transmission infrastructure.

Alexandroupoli terminal set to handle deliveries

Deliveries under the tender will be carried out via the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal. Bulgartransgaz holds a stake in the facility, which is expected to serve as a key logistics hub for incoming cargoes arranged through the procurement process.

Prequalification and compliance requirements

Participation in the tender will be limited to companies with demonstrated expertise in LNG trading and delivery. Suppliers must pass a prequalification phase managed by the platform operator and confirm that the LNG originates from non-sanctioned jurisdictions, reflecting an emphasis on compliance with international regulations.

European alignment and diversification rationale

Bulgartransgaz CEO Vladimir Malinov said the initiative is intended to establish a transparent and reliable procurement framework aligned with European standards. He also highlighted that sourcing LNG from trusted partners—including the United States and other stable exporters—supports efforts to diversify supply routes, strengthening energy security not only in Bulgaria but across the broader region.
