Southern Europe’s LNG inflows soften in week 13 as storage refill season nears

LNG import flows into Southern Europe weakened in calendar week 13, intensifying concerns about how tight supply could become as the region approaches the key storage refill period. With European gas inventories not critically low but still below historical averages in several markets, steady LNG arrivals are increasingly important for keeping prices stable during the shift from winter demand to summer injection.

Declines across Greece, Italy and Croatia

Greece recorded LNG inflows of 663.84 GWh, a 31% decline on the week. Italy’s imports fell by 11.4% to 3,799.35 GWh, while Croatia saw a 6% decrease to 537.33 GWh. Taken together, the regional pattern points to weaker arrival volumes rather than an isolated issue at one terminal or route.

What’s behind the weaker arrivals

The reduction in LNG arrivals reflects a mix of drivers, including global supply constraints, cargo destinations shifting away from Southern Europe, and operational considerations at import terminals. In practice, that combination can quickly change the availability of spot cargoes just as storage needs begin to dominate market decisions.

Why it matters for prices heading into injection season

From a market standpoint, the timing is significant. As LNG availability becomes a key determinant of price stability during storage refill, any sustained disruption to inflows can increase competition for cargoes and put upward pressure on prices. For South East Europe (SEE) markets—where gas demand is met directly through LNG imports or indirectly via interconnected systems—reduced availability can translate into higher gas costs that then feed through into electricity markets.

Traders watch flows for signs of tightening

Traders are monitoring LNG flows closely as an indicator of broader market balance. While short-term fluctuations are common, a sustained decline would be more consistent with tightening conditions and could raise expectations for greater volatility as injection season progresses.
